The Royal Line

Portrait of George III by Allen Ramsay, c. 1767, National Portrait Gallery, London.

The reigning Monarch in 1791 was George III, (George William Frederick, 1738 - 1820), king of Great Britain and Ireland, son of Frederick, prince of Wales, and Grandson of George II, whom he succeeded in 1760. The king suffered from Porphyria, a maddening disease, which disrupted his reign as early as 1765. Several attacks strained his grip on reality and debilitated him in the last years of his reign. He died blind, deaf and mad at Windsor Castle January 29, 1820. His eldest son, George IV (George Augustus Frederick, 1762 - 1830), was appointed regent, and succeeded to the throne on his father's death. William IV, (1765 - 1837),was the third son of George III and succeeded his brother in 1830. Victoria, (Alexandria Victoria, 1819-1901), Queen of Great Britain and Ireland and, from 1876, Empress of India, was the daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent, fourth son of George III, and succeeded to the throne in 1837 on the death of George IV. Edward VII (Albert Edward, 1841-1910), king of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British dominions beyond the seas, emperor of India, was the eldest son of Queen Victoria, who he succeeded in 1901.
